Project LSM3

Built and owned by Kevin Byrd, Project LSM3 is a tribute to homologated racing; European engineering and championship road racing infused with high octane American muscle. Byrd, a powertrain engineer by trade, took a first generation 1990 BMW M3, stripped out all of the powertrain, and grafted in a 2011 GM Performance 6.2L LS3 w/ hot cam and T56 6-speed trans. “The best parts of the chassis remain,” explains Kevin. “The rest has been given a massive injection of steroids. The car is around 500hp and 2900 lbs. Just about everything on this car has been reworked, re-engineered, and custom-made.”

It’s clear this build navigated that tricky line of all-out race car with daily driver details and restraint. Hand formed steel, wide body fenders and quarters house the big BBS wheels and sticky P-zeros. With custom frame rails spliced throughout the uni-body, torque boxes connecting the subframes, and doubler plates in critical load areas, this rocket ship is tight, responsive, and wicked fast. The hand fabrication continues on and on. From full fabbed race headers feeding the dual 3” handmade exhaust, to the trick road race oil pan, and custom under tray, all of it comes together for one mean and nasty vintage racer.
